This was a very enjoyable read. Here is my Amazon review:
This was a captivating story of three brothers trudging through the snowy wilderness to seek help after their parents are trapped in a car wreck. I especially appreciated how the oldest rose to the occasion by assuming the role of family head while carrying his 22-pound baby sister on his back. Near the end of the story there was a hilarious description of one boy's opinion of his Christmas present, one of several examples of how the author does a great job portraying boyish thoughts. This would be a great story for all ages, starting from.middle school (ten years old and up)..
Blurb:
"Lost on the Road to Nowhere" is a family-friendly adventure, recommended for anyone ages 8 and up. In this fast-paced story, four children are stranded all alone in the North Carolina wilderness. They face an untold number of miles of deserted road between them and the medical help they desperately need to find for their parents, who have been badly injured in a wreck on Christmas Eve. As the three brothers and their baby sister climb out of that wrecked car, leave their trapped parents behind and begin an unforgettable journey, they must rely on one another more than they ever have before. They must plan together. They must improvise when they encounter dangerous bears, nightfall and a mysterious old woman. With snow on the ground and time running out, the four children must find a way off the road to nowhere if they are going to rescue their parents – and save themselves.
From the Author
I originally wrote a shorter version of "Lost on the Road to Nowhere" as a Christmas present for my four children. I would read them a chapter each night before bed, often taking a ballpoint pen with me to mark out passages that sounded awkward when read aloud. After showing the original version of the book to some others I trust, I decided to expand it and publish it for a wider audience.
The book has been studied in several elementary schools because of its lessons on teamwork, perseverance and overcoming sibling rivalry. Although it is set on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the North Carolina mountains, it is not only a Christmas story, but a tale of adventure that can be read at any time of the year. I am most gratified when I talk to children about the book, for they are the most honest and enthusiastic audience that any author could ever want.
